I often get asked about my workshops.  What if I don't have any art background?  What if I've never painted before?  I'd really like to try it, but I don't know if I can do it.  First of all, these workshops are a little different that what you might expect.  Encaustic painting can be enjoyed by people with a wide range of artistic experience and a variety of age levels.  This is not a 'wine & paint' type of class, where you copy the the instructor step-by-step to create a 'pretty' painting to take home.  This is about having an opportunity to explore a new way of painting with wax and pigments by learning the basics of the process and then choosing from a wide range of materials and tools to make art that is totally your own.

Those questions you have are about fear, and I say this is all about letting go of your fear and just having fun!  And really, just think about it...where would we be if the Impressionists had been afraid to try something new, if Pollock had been afraid to throw paint around, if Monet had decided that one water lily painting was enough!  Exploration with new techniques and materials is exciting for all ages.  I have had 10 and 11-year-olds take an encaustic class, (with a parent, grandparent or other adult), and they are literally not afraid to try anything and everything they can, once they have seen the process.

Encaustic is an incredibly versatile medium.  If you are an experienced artist, I will show you ways that you can add encaustic techniques to your work whether your preferred medium is painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture.  I provide the very best equipment, tools and paints for an outstanding experience.  I can also advise you on how to set up an encaustic practice at home.

During class we will cover safety issues, learn basic techniques and then begin exploring with a variety of materials, substrates and additional techniques.  The beginning course will get you started and then you can attend any class whenever you like to gain access to all my equipment and supplies.  Just use it as studio time!   I am usually teaching a course at least once a month somewhere in northwest Ohio, so come join me, and bring a friend or family member.
